Wrote a preview of the remarkable China Design Now exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. The exhibition originated at the V&A in London and was designed for PAM by Ziba. One of the wall texts reads:When asked, “How can our design be more international?” Alex Chan replied, “Go ask your mother how she cooks a good meal. What I mean is don’t forget where you are from.”

Glass House in Portland Spaces magazine is a feature on "the Pad" in the 937 building in Portland's Pearl District designed by Andee Hess of Osmose Design. It's an amazing space filled with custom furniture and interesting art. Kudos to Hess. Here's a pdf, you'll have to scroll down.

This review of the Manuf®actured exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft that I wrote for ultra (ultrapdx.com) considers the show as a vital third way in the push and pull between art and craft, a three-footed stool with one foot each in the realms of craft, visual art, and design. Read Manuf®actured delivers in more ways than one.

It was so fun writing this piece on Portland-based fashion designer Holly Stalder and her home with husband Ryan Baldoz. Stalder gets a lot of attention for having founded the Seapland boutique that for many years was the showcase for independent designers in Portland. But for being a leader, she is one of the most down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. Fierce, but real. And their house is a labor of love. In the July/August 2008 issue of Portland Spaces magazine, this is a "Good Life" which is a profile through the lens of space and object. See the full article as a pdf.
